Feb 5, 2016AMHERST, N.Y. – “Get Movin’,” a free exercise program designed for individuals of all abilities, will be held in one-hour sessions starting Feb. 23 at ˿Ƶ College.
Sessions will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through May 3 in the Academic and Wellness Center Room 117. The program is open to individuals with or without disabilities who are age 18 and older.
Offered as a multidisciplinary effort by faculty and students in the ˿Ƶ Nursing and Physical Therapy Departments, sessions will include moderate exercise and information on overall wellness and making healthy choices.
˿Ƶ’s inclusive exercise program is part of a two-phase project, “Get Movin’ – Exercise, Nutrition and Wellness: A Fitness Initiative for Individuals with Disabilities,” funded by a $50,000 Inclusive Fitness Field-Related Grant from the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC). The initiative is being overseen by Dr. Diane Ryan, associate professor of nursing, and Dr. Theresa Kolodziej, director of clinical education in physical therapy.
In addition to the exercise component, ˿Ƶ will hold a program on April 16 to train fitness professionals and others interested in learning more about serving individuals with disabilities in fitness and wellness programming.
